40 years ago, an American senator, Gaylord Nelson, founded Earth Day as an attempt to raise the concern on environmental issues.
In other words, to make us all more aware of the fact that we only have one Mother Planet and not more.
On April 22nd 1970, Earth Day was celebrated for the first time, in America, and in the 90’s, this movement managed to mobilize 200 million people in 141 countries.
In Romania, we are pioneers in this domain; although a lot more green NGO’s, associations and companies have appeared lately. Still, the reality shows us that people‘s interest for “green” action is more a trend, not a belief.
We have fewer and fewer green areas, forests disappear, cut by invisible thieves, the Sea is more and more polluted, and so on. But we don‘t seem to care.
Bucharest, our capital city, was once a “garden city”; now we have only green spots, like Cismigiu Park (or Cismigiu Gardens) which is one of the most known in the City Centre.
Will this Earth Day help us in the fight for a greener environment? Or is it just another useless celebration ?
I only know my birthday is on the 22nd of April (I let you guess the year!) and I will certainly celebrate it with my friends.

Happy Birthday Carmen! Hope it was a good celebration.
I spent only a few hours in Bucharest and I didn’t manage to see any of the green parts, so thanks for introducing another side of the city!
Thank you Liz !
It was a beautiful celebration, with good friends and relatives.
There are still green areas of Bucharest that worth seeing indeed !
What a fascinating post. Really well written.
Thanks Elizabeth !
