Picture Postcards: Cos play girls in Tokyo, Japan

Cos Play girls chatting

Continuing our look at things people wear around the world, here are a group of girls in the Harajuku area of Tokyo dressed up in Cos (ie. costume) play outfits. These are not usually clothes for everyday wear, but dressing up in them and heading out to certain meet-up areas is a kind of hobby in Japan. The costumes are often based on characters from anime (animated films) or manga (comic books) or even video games. Harajuku is an area famous for this at the weekends.

Picture Postcards: Clothing in Minorca

Happy December!

This month we are looking at clothing around the world on Picture Postcards. Our contributor, Marta from Spain, has sent in this photo by Joana Muñoz of a shoe from Minorca. She says; “It’s a typical shoe from Minorca (Balearic Islands) called abarca in Spanish, avarca in Catalan, made from recycled tyres and leather. Seen throughout Spain during the hot and long summer holidays.”

The Chitenge – A Zambian fashion essential

When I lived in the more rural area of Eastern Province in Zambia there was a nearby hospital that regularly had volunteers from abroad. We would often see them walking down the road, enjoying the sunshine in their shorts or mini-skirts.

One day a Zambian colleague came and asked why so many white women he saw would cover the top parts of their body but would show their legs and thighs in short skirts. This was not an unreasonable query for someone who comes from a culture where breastfeeding openly is not an issue but where if you are female you must keep everything covered from your midriff down to below your thighs. In Zambia this area of the body is seen as the erotic area and shouldn’t be shown, not even in trousers.
